Alexandria: Water Main Relocation: Commomwealth Avenue
This is a notification from Virginia American Water. Our contractor, Utilities Unlimited, will begin construction to relocate a water main on Commonwealth Avenue (from 3700 Commonwealth Avenue to Ashby Street). This project was initiated to accommodate the installation of a new storm pipe by the City of Alexandria. It will also improve water service reliability and water flow for firefighting needs. Weather permitting, construction will begin the week of February 16, 2026. Work will take place Monday through Friday between the hours of 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. Saturday work and expanded hours on weekdays may be necessary to maintain the project timeline. We estimate completion, including final asphalt paving restoration of the water line trench will be completed by the end of July 2026. It is important to note that our contractor will try to keep one traffic lane open at all times to local traffic as long as it can be done safely. Construction will not impact access to resident’s homes and driveways. Please follow traffic control and “NO PARKING” signage that will be posted by the City of Alexandria. Some construction noise will be unavoidable with this project, but our contractor will work to minimize the disturbance. If you are a landlord and water service is in your name, please inform your tenants so they are aware of this construction.
